The elliptical trainer is an admittedly funny-looking contraption with its long, ski-like pedals. But it’s been a valuable part of the fitness equipment world for more than 20 years for a reason: The elliptical offers a low-impact cardio workout that can’t be beat. Ellipticals were designed to be easy on the joints, so they’re perfect for people with bad knees who can’t handle running; and even though the impact is minimal on the joints, it’s still a fantastic cardiovascular workout. Ellipticals let you simulate running, walking, or riding a bike, and some incorporate both upper- and lower-body motion as well.
