5 Treadmill Exercises that Don’t Involve Running

Tired of the usual running on your treadmill? Why not spice it up with a different set of exercises? Treadmills are one of the most versatile workout machines out there, mainly because you can adjust them based on what you feel like doing at that time. But do you know that you can also it for plank exercises and even squats?

That’s right, treadmills are not just running machines, they are also great alternatives to the bland exercises you have been doing for the past weeks. Here are 5 exercises you can do on a treadmill that don’t require you to run certain periods of time.

Walking Plank

Speaking of planks, you can actually do this on a treadmill, provided that you adjust the equipment’s speed. Similar to traditional planks, a walking plank also works on your shoulders and forces your stabilizers to work harder.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Set your treadmill to 1-2 mph
  • Walk on your treadmill and get into a plank position, setting your hands on the machine’s base
  • Make sure that your body is positioned in a straight line
  • Place your hands on the machine’s band and walk them forward

Crab Walk

Work those glutes, triceps, core, and hamstrings by doing this exercise on your trusty treadmill.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Walk to your treadmill and get into a crab position
  • Place your hands on the machine’s base, facing yourself away from it, and your back facing the ground
  • Your feet should be flat on the floor and hips should be elevated
  • Place your hands on the treadmill and use them to walk forward

Incline Pushups

No bench press? No problem! No need to go all the way to the gym to do this exercise. Your treadmill has got your back. You’ll still get the same benefits such as muscle development and toned lower chest.

Here’s how you do it:

  • First off, make sure your treadmill is turned off
  • Stand on the side base of the machine, your hands of the top the handles
  • Make sure your body is straight from your heels to your head
  • Bend your elbows to start with the push-up, bringing your chest all the way down to the treadmill console
  • Pause, then push back
  • Repeat

Treadmill Push

Who would’ve thought that you can actually perform a push exercise on your treadmill? If you don’t have a weighted sled, the treadmill is your best option for this particular workout that also mimics the running motion. But here’s the thing: not all belts move when the treadmill is turned off. Don’t push it if you have trouble moving the belt.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Turn off your treadmill and pull the emergency tag
  • Stand on the machine
  • Grip the handles with both of your hands and keep your elbows slightly bent
  • While in this position, drive your legs forward to push the treadmill belt back

Reverse Mountain Climbers

The traditional mountain climber exercise may work in your whole body, but this reverse twist puts more emphasis on kicking your legs back rather than driving your knees in. This is a great workout if you want to sculpt your legs.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Set your treadmill to 1-2 mph
  • Walk behind your machine, facing away from it, and get into a plank position
  • Your hands should be on the floor and your feet should be on the sides of the machine
  • Bring your feet on the treadmill, drive one leg to your chest, while the other is extended back
  • Switch legs during this workout
