How Can I Stay Active While Working From Home?
This entry was posted on April 15, 2021.
A revolution has happened in global job markets in 2020 on the onset of the pandemic.
Home workout during quarantine is the norm and working from home has been an even more needed trend than ever before.
In fact, 55% of businesses globally are already offering some capacity for remote work and 99% of those people working from home want to continue telecommuting in the future.
But, even before the pandemic, 4.7 million people were already working from home according to the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
While working from home may sound like an ideal scenario for some, others find it hard to stay fit with work from home exercise routines.
So, how do you get yourself moving and prevent a sedentary life while working out at home?
Make An Awkward Workspace
One great way to keep yourself staying in one place the whole time you are working at home is to make your home working environment more awkward so that you will be forced to move more frequently.
Try some of these ideas:
- Put your glass of water in another room or don’t use a water bottle that you can easily grab.
- Put your phone in another room so that when it rings, you will get up and move to answer the call.
- Move your printer further away if you need it for work to keep you mobile when you need to print documents.
Do Simple Exercises While At Your Desk
If it’s impossible to tear yourself away from your desk, move while at your desk by doing simple exercises.
Switch off your phone or power down your screen so that you will not be distracted.
Spending five minutes every hour for simple desk exercises can release tension and get the blood flowing.
Here are simple desk work at home exercises:
- Arm wraps
- Shoulder rolls
- Head turns from left to right
- Head tilts forward and backward
- Arm swings/circles
- Calf raises
- Torso twists
- Leg swings from side to side
- Leg lifts
Participate in an Online Exercise Class
You can commit yourself to a work-from-home exercise routine by joining an online exercise class.
This is especially helpful if doing exercises on your own is a difficult thing to commit yourself to do.
Being in a group with people who share the same fitness goals can make it easier and more fun to engage in regular exercise while working from home.
The interactive environment will make it far more likely that you will turn up and take part in the work from home workout because you have some external accountability to ‘show up with your fitness mates.
There are many YouTube videos and smartphone apps that show exercise you can do while working from home like yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, jazzercise.
All you need to do is pick a time, dial-in, and workout “together” (virtually).
Get Into a Walking Routine
Walking into nature will help you relax and take you away from the noise and hustle of urban life.
This simple work from home exercise routine that you can commit to can save you money if enrolling in exercise classes isn’t for you.
Studies suggest that walking in a green space can help remedy mild depression and reduce physiological stress indicators.
You don’t need special equipment, just commitment. You will earn better benefits if you make walking your work from a home exercise routine.
This means you will have to commit yourself to spend at least 10 minutes every day to a walking exercise.
Get Up Every Hour
Penn Medicine suggests a simple exercise while working at home by getting up every hour.
To make sure that you do this, you can set a timer that will remind you to get up and move for a few minutes every hour.
You can configure your smartwatch or app to ring once every hour.
Many digital gadgets already prompt you if you haven’t taken a certain number of steps.
Here are some exercises you can do when you hear the ring to get up:
- Grab a healthy snack
- Walk up and down the stairs
- Do some quick jumping jacks,l sit ups, push-ups, or yoga positions
